Reverend Dana P. Owens was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wright State University in Dayton, OH with a concentration in Mass Communication and African-American studies. His theological training began at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH; he later transferred to New York Theological Seminary (NYTS) in New York City where he was awarded the Master of Divinity degree. While at NYTS, he was awarded the Keith A. Russell Student Preacher award.
Since May of 2004, Rev. Owens has served as the 12th pastor of the historic Messiah Baptist Church in East Orange, NJ. Under his pastorate, Messiah adopted the spiritual theme, Messiah-N-Me (John 15:5-8), highlighting the importance of a personal and committed relationship with Jesus Christ. Messiah has also witnessed significant growth in membership and ministries.
Rev. Owens’ work at Messiah has allowed his ministry to expand beyond the church. He has preached and led numerous workshops across the country. He currently serves as the President of the East Orange Clergy Association; Board Chair for UHIP (Urban Healthcare Initiative Program); and a board member of the Messiah Baptist Church Federal Credit Union. He was recently awarded the 2016 Spiritual Leader award by the Oranges/Maplewood Chapter of the NAACP of New Jersey.
Rev. Owens is married to the former Shalonda Michelle Bayless.
